Infections soar to new high

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded a new record-high number of Covid-19 cases yesterday at 353 with more than half in Sibu District alone, said the State Disaster Management Commi ee (SDMC).

The previous high of 255 cases was recorded exactly a month ago on Jan 24.

SDMC in its daily update said the new cases were detected in Sibu (181), Meradong (67), Kuching (31), Bintulu (22), Kapit (18), Miri (8), Subis (8), Betong (6), Bau (3), Dalat (3), Samarahan (2), Kanowit (1), Saratok (1), Julau (1) and Serian (1).

It also said the Covid-19 death toll in the state was unchanged at 76, while the cumulative number of infections rose to 8,650 with yesterday’s addition.

A statement issued by SDMC showed that 86 of the new cases in Sibu were detected through active case detection (ACD), 70 from individual screening, 12 involving healthcare workers, 11 from symptomati­c screening, and one each from the Pasai and Geronggang clusters.

In Meradong, 65 cases were from the Sungai Bakong Cluster while two were from ACD.

Kuching’s new cases comprised 26 from the Emperoh Jambu Cluster, three from symptomati­c screening, one from ACD and one from the Sungai Maong Cluster.

For Bintulu, 19 of its new cases were from ACD, two from symptomati­c screening, and one from individual screening, while Kapit’s new cases involved 14 from the Gelong Cluster, three from ACD and one from individual screening.

Miri’s eight new cases were from ACD (4), individual screening (2), symptomati­c screening (1), and a returnee from Melaka, while all eight new cases in Subis were from ACD.

In Betong, five cases were from the Jalan Muhibbah Cluster and one from symptomati­c screening.

For Bau, one new case each was detected from the Emperoh Jambu Cluster, ACD and symptomati­c screening.

Dalat’s three cases were from ACD (2) and symptomati­c screening, while both of Samarahan’s new cases were from the Emperoh Jambu Cluster.

The sole new case detected in Julau, Kanowit and Saratok were from individual screening, ACD and symptomati­c screening, respective­ly, while

Serian’s new case was also from ACD.

Meanwhile, SDMC reported 139 new recoveries throughout the state yesterday, with 78 of them at Sibu Hospital followed by 21 at Miri Hospital, 18 at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), 15 at Kapit Hospital, five at Bintulu Hospital and two at Sarikei Hospital.

This brought the cumulative number of Covid-19 patient discharges to 6,238.

The number of active cases under treatment as of yesterday stood at 2,306, of which 1,149 are in Sibu Hospital, 332 in SGH, 240 in Bintulu Hospital, 234 in Miri Hospital, 173 in Kapit Hospital, 152 in Sarikei Hospital, and 26 in Sri Aman Hospital.
