153 fatalities, highest in single day

KUALA LUMPUR: Covid-19 claimed 153 lives over 24 hours up to noon on Sunday, the highest number of fatalities in a single day.

The daily death toll is a jump from the 138 fatalities reported on Saturday.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the country’s Covid-19 death toll now stands at 7,019 cases.

He said of the fatalities reported yesterday, 125 involved Malaysians while 28 more were foreigners.

They involve fatalities in Selangor (82), Kuala Lumpur (17); Negeri Sembilan (14); Johor (10); Kedah (eight), Pahang (six); Melaka (five); two cases each in Sabah, Penang and Putrajaya and one case each in Terengganu, Sarawak, Kelantan, Perak and Labuan.

Dr Noor Hisham said 5,778 recovered cases were reported on Sunday, taking the total number of recoveries to 779,171 cases, while 909 patients are being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU), 445 of whom require respirator­y support.

The country now has 124,593 active cases, he said in a statement on Covid-19 developmen­ts on Sunday.

Dr Noor Hisham tweeted earlier that the number of daily Covid-19 cases dropped on Sunday, with 10,710 reported compared to 12,528 on Saturday. This took the total number of infections to 916,561.

He said Selangor remained the state with the highest number of cases at 4,828, followed by Kuala Lumpur (945); Johor (808); Negeri Sembilan (771); Kedah (696) and Sabah (666).

Perak, meanwhile, reported 407 cases, followed by Pahang (369), Penang (295), Melaka (289), Sarawak (261), Kelantan (146), Terengganu (123); Putrajaya (51); Labuan (50) and Perlis (five). Bernama
