Fire victims to stay temporarily at Luyang Community Hall

-

KOTA KINABALU: The Luyang Community Hall will become a temporary shelter for the victims of the fire at Tanjung Aru Baru floating village which destroyed 23 houses early Sunday morning.

Luyang Community Development Leader Gee Tien Siong said the decision was reached after discussions with various government departments and agencies, including the Luyang Community Development Unit (UPPM) and City Hall Mayor.

“I learned that these victims are local Sabahans.

“I would like to inform all residents of Luyang that there is nothing to be worried about, as this arrangement was discussed and informed to all relevant authorities,” he said.

Gee, who is Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) vice president, said officers, police and Rela personnel would be stationed at the community hall 24 hours to ensure security and safety as well as maintaining order.

Meanwhile City Hall will ensure the cleanliness of the area.

“I want to highlight that this is unlike the 13 October 2019 incident, where a flock of undocumented immigrants gathered around Luyang Community Hall when neither the Luyang assemblyman, the minister, DBKK nor police were aware of it.

That 2019 incident had caused a shock and fears among the people of Luyang,” said Gee in a statement yesterday.

Yesterday morning’s fire broke out at the same village where 10 houses went up in smoke two weeks ago.

Five vehicles and six motorcycles were also destroyed in the latest incident.
