KOTA

KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has taken a swipe at Sabah Democratic Action Party (DAP) secretary Chan Foong Hin for questioning the current government’s handling of illegal immigrants who were affected by the pandemic.

Merotai LDP information chief Kemellia Hasan pointed out that Chan could have helped the illegal immigrants himself since he had the resources to do so.

“As the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kota Kinabalu, Chan should have his own MP fund.

He could have easily used this fund to help those who are in need in his constituency, regardless of whether they are citizens or non-citizens,” she said in a statement on Saturday.

Kemellia pointed out that the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government has clarified that that it will not stop anyone from donating to illegal immigrants who have put up white flags.

“Although the GRS government has stressed that its priority is to help citizens, they had clarified that they will not stop any NGOs or parties from helping the illegal immigrants.

“So this means that Chan and DAP are welcomed to help the illegal immigrants if they really want to do so,” said Kemellia.

She reminded Chan that the Warisan Plus government had failed to get rid of the illegal immigrants during their twoyear reign.

She added that Warisan themselves had helped the people of Pulau Gaya in the past.

Kemellia urged DAP to go to the ground to help the people instead of making statements that would only provoke the public.

She said that now is not the time to play politics and called on all the assemblypersons to unite in helping the people, regardless of their background.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun had said that the GRS government will not stop anyone from donating to the illegal immigrants who were affected by the pandemic.

In principle, he said the State Government would only provide assistance to those with citizenship status.

“However, if there are any non-governmental organisations or members of the public who want to help the PATIs, the government will not stop them from doing so,” he said.
