Drunk driving lands security guard in jail

KOTA KINABALU: A security guard was jailed for three years and fined RM8,000, in default, 24 months’ imprisonme­nt by the Traffic Court here on Wednesday for driving a car under the influence of alcohol and resulted in an accident with a motorcycli­st four years ago.

Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun imposed the sentences on Osward Mompungi, 57, after he decided to change his plea of not guilty to one of guilty when the case came up for trial.

Osward was charged under Section 44 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The indictment provides for a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine of up to RM10,000, upon conviction.

The charge stated that the accused had driven the car while intoxicate­d at Jalan Sepulut-Donggongon Tambunan on Oct 5, 2019.

Due to that the accused had involved in the accident with a 31-year-old rider.

The charge further stated that the accused had 216mg alcohol in his 100ml blood which exceeded 136mg in 100ml blood.

Permitted level set under the law is 80mg in 100ml blood.

Meanwhile, an unemployed man who is now serving jail sentences for various conviction­s was jailed for another 12 months and fined RM2,000, in default, six months’ jail for stealing a foreign woman’s money.

Karim Adam, 55, pleaded guilty before magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles, to stealing RM1,000 in cash from a Filipina at a bank branch at Jalan Pantai on February 25, 2022.

The offence was under Section 379 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine, or both, upon conviction.

The court ordered Karim to serve the sentence consecutiv­ely with the jail sentences he is currently serving.
