GRS urged to support RM5 meal
KOTA KINABALU: The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) state administration has been urged to support and expand the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Federal Government’s ‘Menu Rahmah’ initiative to Sabah.
In a statement released on Thursday, Warisan vice-president Datuk Junz Wong who is Tanjung Aru State Assemblyman, said that the initiative has received great response in West Malaysia, but is almost unheard or unseen in Sabah.
“In West Malaysia, even the M40 and T20 consumers are flooding participating outlets to have lunch for just RM5.
“How often do you hear of RM5 meals nowadays? Even economy rice costs more than that.
“This is definitely a good initiative by the Federal Government to offer consumers more dining options and lower the cost of living for those struggling to cope.
“But very unfortunately, this initiative is almost unheard or unseen in Sabah. This is despite cost of eating out in Sabah is much higher than West Malaysia.
“How much does it cost to have lunch at coffee shops nowadays? RM8? RM10?”
“I think Sabahans would definitely want to have lunch for just RM5.”
To that, Junz who is also Warisan’s Vice President said that the GRS state administration should support and further expand the Federal Government’s ‘Menu Rahmah’initiative.

further expand this initiative by roping in more Sabah eateries.
“There are many ways GRS can support and further expand this initiative.
“For example, the state administration can offer incentives like discounting or waiving business licenses, assessment fees etc in order to encourage local Sabah eateries participate in this initiative.”
For the record, ‘Menu Rahmah’ which was launched on Tuesday is an initiative and cooperation by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, with the cooperation of participating outlets to serve lunch or dinner sets at the recommended price of RM5.
Each meal is balanced to include rice, a choice of protein such as chicken or fish, a portion of vegetables and a drink.
Apart from anchor participants like Mydin Supermarket and Ali Maju mamak restaurant, the ministry is targeting 15,000 participating outlets nationwide, mostly in the Klang Valley and Peninsular.
