UMS aspires to collaborat­e with GIOAS

KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) aspires to collaborat­e with George Town Institute of Open and Advanced Studies (GIOAS) to discuss economics and environmen­tal conservati­on in Sabah.

UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor said GIOAS, which is an institute under Wawasan Open University in Penang, can also cooperate with UMS to implement community engagement programs.

“This collaborat­ion will surely benefit UMS and the society as a whole,” he said in a meeting between the two parties in UMS here recently.

During the meeting, he had welcomed the GIOAS delegation which was led by its chairman, Tan Sri Andrew Sheng, who is also the Pro-Chancellor in Bristol Academy, United Kingdom.

Kasim also informed that Andrew is a Sabah local who possesses vast experience in the world of banking, and had served at the World Bank.

According to him, Andrew was the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) chairman and is also a board member of Khazanah Nasional Berhad. Other members of the GIOAS delegation included Dr Douglass Carmichael and Dr Shiu Man Fai.

Also present during the meeting were UMS Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Prof Ir Dr Rosalam Sarbatly, Assistant Vice Chancellor (Industry and Community Network) Prof ChM Ts Dr Coswald Stephen Sipaut @ Mohd Nasri, Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting Dean Prof Madya Dr Mohd Rahimie Abd Karim, Center for Industrial Collaborat­ion and Engagement deputy director Dr Chin Pei Yee, as well as representa­tives from the Faculty of Tropical Forestry, Center for Corporate Communicat­ions, and Center for Internatio­nalisation and Global Engagement.
