Flood victims drop in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: The number of flood victims in Sabah dropped to 452 people from 137 families in seven relief centres, compared to 535 people from 165 families on Friday morning.

The Sabah Disasters Management Secretaria­t said Beaufort recorded the most victims with 200 people, Telupid (174), Beluran (48) and Paitan (30).

Only six temporary flood relief centers are still in operation as of Feb 3.

The Sabah Disasters Management Secretaria­t in a statement yesterday stated that Masjid Gana Jati and Masjid Kampung Nangoh, both in Telupid are still housing flood victims, while Dewan Kg Bambangan, also in Telupid, officially closed at 2pm on Friday.

Some 74 people from 22 families are currently taking shelter at Masjid Gana Jati, while 27 people from seven families are at Masjid Kampung Nangoh.

In Beluran, Dewan Kg Balaban Jaya is housing 42 people from eight families while Balai Raya

Kg Klagan, also in Beluran is only housing a family of six people.

Dewan Sebagunan Selagon in Beaufort is sheltering 209 people from 58 families, while Masjid Al Munawwaroh Kg Jawa in Tawau is housing 39 people from seven families.

The statement added that authoritie­s will continue to monitor the flood situation and any temporary flood relief centers that have been closed will reopen if necessary.

Meanwhile , Sabah Education Department deputy director Abidin Marjan said 3,189 students and teachers are currently affected with 15 schools in Beluran, Tenom and Beaufort unable to open.

They are SK Sualok, SK Pantai Boring and SMK Pamol in Beluran; SK Kalang Kanar in Tenom; and SK Jabang, SK Bangkalala­k, SK Suasa, SK Lago, SK Lian Hwa, SK Lembah Poring, SMK St John, SK Garama, SK Mempagar, SK Kabajang, SK Pekan Membakut and SK Lupak in Beaufort.
