Geogrid layer technology to repair Kinabatangan road

-

KOTA KINABALU: The first repair works on the road in Kampung Jaya Baru, Kinabatangan, which is in critical condition, is currently being carried out via the Geogrid layer technology, said Lamag community development leader (PPM) Nizam Johari.

He said the works had started since Jan 16, and he explained the technology utilises a Geogrid layer between the road base layer and then a Glassrid layer between the road’s pre-mix surface.

“The use of the Geogrid layer technology can help stabilise the road structure as well as increase the level of response to the load imposed on the said structure.

“This first repair works of 100 meters is estimated to be fully completed within one week if there are no other obstacles encountered such as continuous rainy weather or problems with the production of road construction materials at the work site,” he said in a statement.

Earlier, Nizam said his side had held a meeting with the Kinabatangan Public Works Department (JKR) to find a solution to the problem together with the concessionaire.

Nizam also confirmed that there are four locations along the road in Kampung Jaya Baru in critical condition that often receive complaints, and it was found that the damage was caused by the weak condition of the soil structure as it cannot support the load of increased traffic flow, especially by heavy vehicles.

Therefore, he said his side is of the opinion that the road is no longer suitable for routine maintenance, and it is for this reason that JKR Kinabatangan proposed to use the Geogrid manufacturing method.

“Since the construction materials for the Geogrid technology has to be sent here from West Malaysia, it is expected to take some time, and permanent repairs at the other three critical locations will require more time.

“However, gravel maintenance work at these three critical locations will always be carried out for the safety of road users,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nizam said the same situation of weak soil structure had also been identified in several other areas in the district such as Sukau, Lot M, Batu Puteh, Paris 1, and Paris 3.

Therefore, he said road users are advised to be careful when driving especially during rain, and to always obey the set speed limit, adding that his side together with JKR Kinabatangan will continuously monitor the maintenance process.
