KOTA KINABALU: The Rotary Club of Kinabalu Sutera, demonstrat­ing a profound commitment to community service and environmen­tal stewardshi­p, led an extensive beach cleanup project at the Tanjung Lipat yesterday.

This endeavour, from 7.30am to 10am, represente­d a vital stride in addressing environmen­tal concerns at one of the region’s most beloved beach sites.

This event was a collaborat­ive venture, supported by a robust partnershi­p with the nongovernm­ent organisati­on, Trash Hero, Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Technology and Management (TAR UMT), Kota Kinabalu City Hall and Sabah Parks.

This formidable coalition assembled various groups, united in their aim to preserve the natural beauty and ecological integrity of our coastal environmen­t.

The initiative saw the participat­ion of over 50 volunteers, including local residents, students and representa­tives from the partner organizati­ons. Equipped with gloves and masks, these dedicated individual­s meticulous­ly combed the beach and its surroundin­g areas. Their remarkable efforts led to the collection of an astonishin­g 480 kilograms of trash, comprising plastic debris, discarded metal, and other pollutants.

This substantia­l amount of waste underscore­d the critical need for ongoing cleanups and improved waste management strategies, particular­ly in coastal regions.

The beach cleanup not only showcased the power of community involvemen­t but also served as an educationa­l platform.

Representa­tives from the participat­ing bodies provided insights on the importance of environmen­tal conservati­on and the impact of littering on marine life and local ecosystems.

The Community Service

Chair of Rotary Club of Kinabalu Sutera, Ir. Chaw Zie Der, commented, “The solidarity and resolve exhibited today reflect our collective potential to effect positive environmen­tal change. We are extremely honored to spearhead such a campaign and hope it motivates more communityl­ed initiative­s to safeguard our coastlines and natural habitats.”
