Safa Cup grand final for Friday’s kick-off

KOTA KINABALU: The much anticipate­d Sabah Football Associatio­n (Safa) Cup Grand Final will kick off tomorrow.

Twelve district teams will be involved in Jan 26-28 tournament after going through the qualifying process in six zones that ended recently.

The teams have been divided into four groups of three teams each and the group fixtures up until the semifinal matches will take place at the Sukma Field A and B as well as the Rugby Field A & B in Likas.

The draw to decide the groups was conducted at the state football body office by Safa executive secretary David Wisom and Safa developmen­t technical official Roney Asmadul Bakar.

Representa­tives from all 12 finalist teams participat­ed through online platform.

The teams in Group A are Tongod, Nabawan and Kota Belud; Group B comprises Sipitang, Tawau and Putatan; Group C consists of Kota Marudu, Kinabatang­an and Penampang; and Group D will feature Keningau, Kuala Penyu and Kunak.

The two top teams after the completion of the group fixtures will advance into the semifinals which will be played at the Sukma A and B fields on Jan 27 at 3pm.

The third and fourth place match and the final will be played at the Likas Stadium at 2pm and 4pm respective­ly on Jan 28.

Prize money totalling RM40,000 is up for grabs in addition to trophies and medals.

An initiative of Safa Local Competitio­ns Committee headed by its vice president Datuk Seri Dr Ruddy Awah, the main objective of Safa Cup is to identify new talents to be roped into the Sabah FC teams to face the MFL Cup, President Cup and Youth Cup.
