Sabah at forefront of interior design industry evolution

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah stands at the forefront of the evolution of the interior design industry with its cultural richness and natural beauty, said State Works Minister Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya.

Speaking during the inaugural MIID REKA Sabah Conference 2024 at Hyatt Centric here on Saturday, he said the interior design industry globally and within this region has seen a remarkable transformation, and the state’s diverse landscape, from its urban centers to natural retreats, offers a canvas for innovative interior design that harmonically blends modernity with tradition.

Shahelmey said the connection between interior design and key economic sectors such as tourism, property development and retail is evident, with high-end residential projects, hotels, resorts and retail spaces increasingly seeking interior design solutions that reflect not just aesthetic beauty but also functionality and cultural relevance.

“It is a well-observed trend that regions rich in natural resources and cultural heritage, like ours, attract significant interest in property development, which in turn boosts the demand for skilled interior design.

“Our state’s wealth in natural resources, notably timber, offers an unparalleled advantage. The responsible and creative use of these resources in interior design not only adds to the aesthetic value but also contributes to sustainable practices. This approach aligns with global trends where sustainability and ethical use of materials are becoming paramount in the design industry.

“Moreover, aligning our interior design standards with international benchmarks elevates Sabah’s position not just as a tourist destination but as a hub for quality living and working environments. By doing so, we enhance the value of our built environment, making it conducive for both local residents and international visitors.

“As we embrace the potential of interior design to reshape our spaces and lives, let us commit to fostering an environment that values creativity, sustainability and cultural sensitivity. Together, we can ensure that the interior design industry in Sabah not only thrives but also sets a standard for excellence and sustainability,” he said.

Regarding the programme, Shahelmey, who is also Deputy Chief Minister III, said it was a privilege to witness a significant step by the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) in enriching the state’s design landscape.

He said REKA Sabah is more than an event; it is a catalyst for growth and information which provides a platform for local designers to showcase their talent, learn from global best practices, and contribute to the state’s economy and cultural landscape.

REKA Sabah was launched by MIID as a pioneering initiative designed to foster growth and innovation in the interior design industry in East Malaysia, serving as a platform for MIID members to learn, share, and engage in dialogues about critical issues in interior design.

This initiative represents a significant step towards developing a vibrant and collaborative design community in Sabah, a testament to MIID’s commitment to enriching the region’s design landscape, with a focus on embracing global trends, sustainability, and cultural sensitivity.

It is not only about celebrating design but also expanding knowledge and inspiring innovation among both seasoned professionals and emerging talents in the field.

Coinciding with the launch, MIID also hosted its inaugural REKA Sabah Conference, a landmark event that brings together industry professionals, enthusiasts and experts to explore the evolving landscape of interior design.

The theme of the inaugural conference, “IMPACT”, highlights the profound influence of interior design in various sectors, including tourism, property development and retail.

The conference aims to redirect the focus from mere aesthetics to the true purpose and impact of design - solving problems, enriching lives, and creating spaces that are compassionate, accessible, inclusive, ethical and responsible.

Also present were Board of Architects Malaysia president Dato’ Ar Azman Md Hashim and MIID president IDr Ooi Boon Seong.
