Jonathan hopeful to represent M’sia again in Paralympic Games
KOTA KINABALU: Paralympian Jonathan Wong is hopeful that he will be able to again represent the country in the Paralympic Games in Paris this year.
Jonathan, who is partially blind, competes in the T12 (visual impairment) long jump event. The 32-year-old Sabahan first represented Malaysia in the Tokyo Paralympic Games in 2020. He however failed to make it to the finals of the T12 (visual impairment) long jump event due to injury.
This time round, Jonathan vowed to do better and will be competing in the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2024 in Dubai to qualify for the Paralympic Games in Paris.
“I have been training hard almost every day and I hope to better my season-best record which is 6.65 metres. My target is seven meters and above,” he said when met by reporters in Papar on Sunday.
Jonathan, also received the support and encouragement from Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin who visited Benoni Papar to officiate the launching of the Parklane Condo show unit. The Parklane Condo project is developed by WSG Group.
Jonathan’s mother, Datuk Susan Wong, said Tun Juhar gave his blessing to him and wished him the best in the championship.
Susan, who is the managing director for WSG Group added, “Tun Juhar also hoped that Jonathan will bring home a gold medal and qualify for the Paralympic Games in Paris.
The World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2024 will run from Feb 12 to June 15 with seven stops across four continents. The 11th GP season will kick off and end in venues that hosted Para Athletics World Championships in the past in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Paris, France.
