Discount offers to pay half a million summonses

-

KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu City Hall has launched a campaign offering discounts from 50 per cent to 80 per cent to encourage offenders to settle half a million summonses.

Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah said on Wednesday that the 'Let's settle the summonses' campaign started on Feb 2 and will end on March 31, 2024.

The offer is for summonses issued for the Kota Kinabalu City By-law (Public Parking Provisions) (Coupon Public Parking) 2014, and the By-law (Streets and Public Places) City of Kota Kinabalu 1966, Amendment 2008.

“The discounted rate is also offered to cases in which summonses have been issued for them to be brought to court but have not yet reached the trial stage,” he said.

“It will not apply to other by-law offences since these two by-laws are the offences with the most compound notices issued and the offences committed are less serious than other by-laws,” he said.

“This reduction will only be given for online payment only,” he added.

“After this period, there is no further extension of compound notice reduction or the implementation of the amnesty period. We will take appropriate legal action like other cases done previously,” he added.

According to Sabin, there are a total of 435,528 unsettled summonses from a total of 1,106,215 issued from 2003 for offences related to 26 city by-laws.

He said that only 670,687 compound notices or 61 per cent were settled, adding that the summonses did not include those issued for parking fee offences issued by City Hall's subsidiary, DBKK Holding Sdn Bhd.

“So far, City Hall has issued warning notices, opened investigation papers, prosecuted in court and even obtained arrest warrants for the offenders,” said Dr Sabin.

“But there are still offenders who still refuse, default and fail to settle the compound notices offered until legal action is taken in court,” he added.
