Increase police presence in crime hot spots — KDCA Youth Council

-

KOTA KINABALU: The KDCA Youth Council called on the local authorities to increase police presence in areas that have been identified as hot spots for crime.

Its chairman, Steve Johnny Mositun, said this is because the recent spate of snatch thefts the city has raised concerns among residents.

“The viral case on social media involving a recent victim has garnered public attention which is why we, KDCA Youth Council, feel that police patrols in residential areas and shopping centres should be intensified to reduce the chances of crimes occurring,” he said.

Steve in a statement on Thursday said that residents are also urged to increase their awareness of their surroundings and ensure appropriate safety measures are taken at all times.

“Initiatives to enhance safety awareness among the community should also be intensified through public awareness campaigns, he said, adding that the increase in snatch theft cases indeed had a significant impact on the local community.

“Many feel afraid to leave their homes, especially at night, and daily activities such as strolling or shopping have been affected,” he said.

Steve admitted concern that his and his family’s safety has become a burdensome issue. Steve who is also Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Youth’s information officer also called on all members of the community, regardless of age, to always be cautious when outside.

“It is crucial to take proactive safety measures, not only for ourselves but also for the increasing number of national and international tourists. Even though the situation has not reached a critical level, awareness of the issue is key, especially in an era of rapid information dissemination through the internet,” he said.

“Thanks for the government’s efforts through related agencies in promoting Sabah’s economy through tourism; however, a focus on safety regulations is also a priority in these challenging times.

“Nevertheless, we believe that the security forces, especially the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), will take immediate action to address this issue. At the same time, the responsibility of ensuring the security and safety of the community is a shared priority and not solely the responsibility of the authorities.

“With the cooperation of all parties, it is hoped that this issue can be effectively resolved to safeguard the security and well-being of the Kota Kinabalu community,” he said.
