KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president Datuk Chin Su Phin fully supports Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim’s call to strengthen unity and harmony among the people to build a prosperous nation that is aligned with Malaysia Madani aspiration.

Chin also concurred with His Majesty’s emphasis on maintaining political stability and applauded the King’s intolerance towards attempts to trigger a premature change of government through backdoor maneuverers.

“This does not only uphold the integrity of the political system in our country, but also safeguard the constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy system.

“In his speech, His Majesty has revealed his thoughts on the future of the country, and has stressed on political principles and sustainability to ensure long-term stability of the nation,” Chin said in response to His Majesty’s Royal Address when opening the first meeting of the third session of the 15th Parliament on Monday.

Chin said the King also warned all levels of society to maintain harmony, and not to touch on issues involving the royal institution, race or religion.

Sultan Ibrahim said unity is still lacking in the country even though Malaysia was formed over 60 years ago. The King also said that there are still Malaysians who had failed to master the national language and appreciate the diverse cultures of the other races.

As such, he said the education system should focus more on cultural diversity to promote better understanding and respect in the country.

Chin said the King’s determination and confidence towards the political system will stabilize the political landscape in the country that enables the economy to grow steadily.

He said political stability will help attract domestic and foreign investors, and pave the way to speed up economic recovery.

“Foreign investors will be more interested to invest in a politically stable environment and their investments will stimulate the economy and local industries.”

Chin stressed that the King’s speech has provided a clear direction on harmonious development in the country.

By maintaining political stability, the country will be one step closer to realizing national unity and promoting common development in all levels of society, and contribute towards the prosperity of the nation, he said. This echoes the importance of multiculturalism emphasized by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, he said.

Chin said the Parliament plays a crucial role in the current political system as the Dewan Rakyat is where laws are made and amended.

“As His Majesty rightly pointed out, parliamentarians should abide by the rules they make and failure to do so will harm the country’s reputation.

“Hence, the King’s move to give green light to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker to take action against any member of parliament who go overboard is a necessity to prevent lawmakers who misbehave, and to ensure the smooth operation of the Parliament.”

Chin also stressed the responsibility of members of parliament as lawmakers, who should lead by example.

“Members of parliament should maintain decorum and demonstrate good discipline to uphold the dignity of Parliament, which is also key to ensure the normal functioning of the legal system.”

Chin also commended His Majesty’s attention to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), particularly in providing a guideline for the government in handling historical issues, as well as in building a solid foundation for a harmonious Malaysia.

He said His Majesty has established common values for all ethnic groups with regards to longstanding historical issues. This is not only a sign of respect for history, but will also promote harmonious development and create a more hopeful future for Malaysia Madani.

Chin reiterated that LDP fully support His Majesty’s direction on the political, economic and social development of Malaysia.

He said the government, political parties and Malaysians should work together in realizing His Majesty’s aspiration for a harmonious and prosperous Malaysia Madani.

“With stronger unity, we can accelerate the development of the country and make Malaysia dazzle on the international stage.”
