Unity govt, cabinet urged to show strong support for Tiong

-

KOTA KINABALU: President of The Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong), Tan Sri T.C Goh, has opined that the unity government and its entire Cabinet should come out in defence of Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, against recent criticisms by those with ulterior motives.

Goh said as members of the unity government and colleagues in the unity cabinet, the government should stand firmly with Tiong, instead of letting it appear as if Tiong was facing this alone, thereby allowing the issue from being further exacerbated.

He opined that the government should pay close attention to and demonstrate the ‘team spirit’ of the unity government on the recent issues triggered by Tiong’s reassignment of a former Tourism Malaysia directorgeneral, and the inclusion of bak kut teh (a popular Chinese dish) along with other ethnic foods in the national food heritage, which had unfortunately come under criticisms by those with selfinterest.

He expressed deep regret and concern over the politicization and racialisation of the incidents by some politicians or those with ulterior motives, who targeted Tiong, and hopes that such practices of taking things out of context and dividing the public will stop.

He also hoped that the government or cabinet will quickly intervene to show support for Tiong, and should no longer remain “silent” over the issue.

Goh, who is also the president of the Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) said this in a statement on Thursday, while expressing his full support for Tiong’s outspoken and decisive leadership in leading the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

He said Tiong’s style of leadership was much in line with the “Malaysia Madani” agenda advocated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, focusing on national development, social justice, public interest, departmental structure, and the bureaucratic system, among others.

Goh also commended Tiong for being selfless, courageous and highly efficient in executing his duties and responsibilities, since he took office.

He added that recent incidents and issues showed that Tiong has never overstepped his authority, but instead exercised his ministerial powers appropriately.

“No one should racialize or politicize these matters, which would be extreme, unwise, and irresponsible!” he stressed.

He reiterated that the unity government and unity cabinet should fully demonstrate the true ‘spirit of unity’ in this matter.

He asserted that the country needs decisive ministers like Tiong, who are hands-on and diligent, especially in the tourism, arts, and culture sectors.

“This is very much in line with the government’s continued efforts to develop the tourism industry, and to bring in more foreign exchange to boost the national economy.

Since his appointment, Tiong has proven his avant-garde and pragmatic leadership style and performance,” Goh concluded.
