Opposition MPs told to behave professionally
KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) secretary-general Datuk Chin Shu Ying has strongly urged opposition members to behave professionally instead of acting up and left the hall during Parliament sitting.
He said a professional opposition party would exhibit proper decorum in political debates, policy-making and discussion of national affairs.
He said the action of the opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) is not only a protest against the ruling party, but was done so without considering the long-term interests of the country.
He said a professional opposition party should possess deep understanding and ability to formulate beneficial policies and knowledge of the nation’s economy.
Chin said the opposition parties should focus on the national economy and other important agendas, rather than debating on irrelevant issues.
He pointed out that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim has clearly emphasized on the importance of political stability and that His Majesty would not entertain the premature change in government through backdoor manoeuvrers.
“A professional opposition party would have proposed feasible recommendations on important agendas and support long-lasting peace in the country.”
On Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (Bersatu) allegation of bribery involving the ruling party, Chin said a report should be lodged to the Malaysia AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) rather than arguing about the matter in Parliament.
He said opposition MPs should remain calm and take appropriate action, instead of engaging in political bickering.
Chin said that Perikatan Nasional (PN) had failed to fulfil its duty as a responsible opposition given its constant attempt to topple to present government.
“This should serve as a warning that opposition parties should not merely be obsessed with regime change, but should propose constructive policies and solutions.”
Chin said the opposition should demonstrate their willingness to work with the ruling party to promote the country’s development, and strive to contribute viable policies and debate rationally.
He said responsibility and professionalism are crucial to an opposition party.
He said a professional opposition would have prioritized the long-term interests of the nation and offer solutions to tackle problems, instead of criticizing the ruling party all the time.
Chin added politicians should maintain high standard of professionalism, which in turn, is crucial for ensuring political stability.
He reiterated that the people wish to see the opposition party fulfilling their duties that will contribute towards the prosperity and stability of the country.
On Tuesday, opposition MPs staged a walkout from the Dewan Rakyat over a “last-minute” slot given to Prime Minister Datuk Deri Anwar Ibrahim to thank the present and past Yang di-Pertuan Agongs for their service.
At a press conference, Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said this was an extraordinary occurrence, as they were not informed of the slot given to Anwar, while the debate on the King’s speech was ongoing.
