Man jailed for stealing shoes

KOTA KINABALU: A Magistrate’s Court here sentenced an unemployed man to two months behind bars for stealing a pair of branded shoes belonging to an officer.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie meted out the sentence on Ahmad Awang after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

Ahmad, 57, was arrested for stealing the footwear at a prayer room (surau) at the Kota Kinabalu Internatio­nal Airport on February 17.

The court heard that the victim, who was on transit at the airport, went to the surau to take a rest. When he came out later, he found his shoes were missing.

The victim then lodged a report. Based on CCTV recordings and with the help of auxiliary police, Ahmad was arrested at the surau. A pair of shoes was also seized from him.

In a separate case, a drinks seller claimed trial in the same court here to stealing two cameras.

Mohamad Azlan Shah Mohd Adam, 25, was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code with stealing the two items from a shop at a shopping complex here between 9.12pm and 9.13pm on April 11.

The court set May 17 for pre-trial case management and Mohamad Azlan, who is represente­d by counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence, was released on a bail of RM2,000 with two local sureties.

Meanwhile, two security guards claimed trial in the same court to a charge of abetting with two accomplice­s in committing mischief.

Mohammad Affendy Ibrahim, 26, and Safari Sabile, 31, were charged under Section 109 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 431A of the same Code.

The charge stated that the duo had allegedly in cohort with two accomplice­s, who are still at large, committed mischief on copper wires of a condominiu­m in Menggatal between 3.15am and 4.45am on April 9.

Their case will be mentioned back on June 10 for pre-trial case management.

The court granted them RM2,000 bail with two local sureties.
