Proposal to change title of Sabah CM to ‘Premier’

-

KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party Vice-President David Ong fully endorses the proposal put forth by Tanjong Kapor assemblyman Ben Chong to change the title of the Sabah Chief Minister to ‘Premier’.

Ong said this proposal reflects Sabah’s historical significance and its role as an equal partner in the formation of Malaysia in 1963. It embodies the will of the people of Sabah, who have long sought recognition of our State’s unique status.

Aligning the title to ‘Premier’ serves as a testament to Sabah’s historical and political identity reinforcing the importance of preserving and promoting Sabah’s distinctiveness within the Malaysia Federation, he pointed out in a statement on Tuesday.

Following the example set by Sarawak in 2022, he said this proposed change is not merely a matter of semantics but a crucial step towards affirming Sabah’s rightful place and representation within Malaysia. It underscores Sabah’s commitment to upholding its rights and pursuing its interests under the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

Moreover, aligning the title of the State’s leader with international standards, such as those observed in Commonwealth countries like Australia and Canada, enhances Sabah’s standing on the global stage. The term “premier” carries connotations of autonomy and leadership, befitting Sabah’s position as one of the three territories (States) and not one of the 13 states within Malaysia.

This change will have a significant positive impact on various aspects of Sabah’s society and economy, including better representation and clearer government structure, underscoring its significance for the State’s overall development and prosperity. It will also shape the future of younger generations, ensuring they inherit a Sabah that is confident, respected and empowered within Malaysia, he said.

“We urge the Sabah government to seriously consider and expeditiously implement this proposal aimed at enhancing governance and representation in State. By making this change, Sabah will send a clear message that it is ready to assert its identity and pursue its aspirations with confidence,” said Ong.
