Teaser on ‘Bang Bang!’ mirrors Hollywood hit

-

MUMBAI: The teaser for Bang Bang! starring Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif mirrors Knight and Day, the Hollywood movie which featured Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.

Its tagline reads: “On the most peaceful day of the year, bullets will fly.”

In a previous interview explaining the project, Fox International Productions president Sanford Panitch said that Bang Bang! “happens to be based on a Hollywood fi lm that the director ( Siddharth Anand) and Roshan thought would lend itself well to the Indian market. But it’s almost a reinvention — it’s really a Bollywood fi lm. Most of the audience probably never saw the original, while for some pockets of the audience there may be a curiosity to compare it with Knight and Day.”

The action-packed sequences from the Bang Bang! teaser have already seen the fi lm being likened to the homegrown Dhoom blockbuster franchise (from veteran Bollywood studio Yash Raj Films), the third instalment of which last December set boxoffice records. Both Roshan and Kaif have separately starred in the Dhoom franchise (in the second and third installments, respectively).

“I spent three years writing the fi lm. The kind of action you’ll get to see here has hardly been attempted in the industry before,” Anand said about Bang Bang! in a statement released at the same time as the trailer. “It’s a blend of action and romance in the truest sense.

“I am really happy with the way Hrithik and Katrina have infused life into their characters.”

While the Indian fi lm industry has long been accused of ripping off foreign fi lms for storylines — and even poster designs — the trend of official remakes is slowly taking root. FSS recently released City Lights, the Hindi remake of Metro Manila, the British entry for Best Foreign Language Oscar in 2013.

Back in 2010, leading producer Karan Johar’s We Are Family — a Bollywood remake of the Julia Roberts- Suran Sarandon-starrer Stepmom — was considered the fi rst major official Hindi remake of an international fi lm.
