SIBU: Divisional health officer Dr Muhammad Rais Abdullah hopes to see a long-term collaboration between Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health (QSNICH) and Sibu in the fight against dengue fever.

Speaking at the ‘International Workshop on Case Management of Dengue Fever’ at the Faculty of Medicine, Segi University Sibu Clinical Campus at Sibu Hospital yesterday, Dr Muhammad Rais said a lot more had to be done to win the battle against dengue fever.

“This year alone, we have recorded 117 dengue outbreaks and we managed to control 115 of them,” he said.

On the workshop, he said the programme was important and relevant to be held here as Sibu was one of divisions in Sarawak with a very high number of cases.

“I am glad that this workshop is held in Sibu. We may have been dealing with dengue fever since the 1980s, but I believe there are a lot more to be learned,” he said.

He thus urged the participants to make full use of the opportunity to seek answers to the problems they faced in managing dengue patients.

The workshop organised by Segi University ( Sibu campus) attracted 120 participants from the university, Sarawak Nursing Professional Association ( Sibu branch), Sibu Hospital and Sibu Nursing College.

Sibu Hospital director Dr Ngian Hie Ung, organising chairman Professor Mohd Raili Suhaili who is also Sibu Segi Campus Associate Dean and consultant of World Health Organisation (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Case Management of Dengue Professor Dr Suchitra Nimmannitya were among those present.

The speakers came from Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health.
