Dong Zong’s fate hinges on its Aug 23 EGM, opines Chou

KUCHING: The extraordinary general meeting ( EGM) of United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Malaysia ( Dong Zong) is the only way to solve the impasse in Dong Zong.

Board of Management for Kuching Chung Hua Primary Schools No.1 to 6’s immediate past chairman, Dr Chou Chii Ming, who stated this, opined that the EGM to be held this coming Aug 23 was called in accordance with Dong Zong’s by-laws.

“The meeting and resolutions passed at that meeting should be legal and binding. The Chinese community all agree that this EGM is the only way to solve the present impasse in Dong Zong,” he said yesterday when prompted for comments on the forthcoming EGM.

Chou appealed to the minority to follow the majority during the meeting.

“They (minority) must all abide by the resolutions of the EGM for progress and development of Dong Zong.”

On July 30, 2015, Registrar of Society ( ROS) director general, Mohammad Razin Abdullah, issued a show cause letter to Dong Zong’s two rival factions. The letter demanded them to explain within one month why Dong Zong should not be deregistered.

The two factions, one led by elected president Dr Yap Sin Tian and the other by secretary general Poh Chin Chuan, had earlier been directed by the ROS to settle their disputes by the end of July.

Despite the directive, the infighting dragged on.

If Dong Zong is deregistered, all its assets and activities, including the Unified Examination Certificate ( UEC) examinations that will be held in October in all 60 Chinese independent schools nationwide, will be frozen.
