There’s no shortcut to master English, SPM students told

- By James Ling reporters@theborneopost.com

The only way to master the English Language, especially creative English, is practise, practise and practise.

KAPIT: Some 240 Form 5 students from SMK Kapit, SMK Kapit 2 and SMK Selirik have been reminded that there is no shortcut to mastering the English Language.

They must, however, burn the midnight oil because English is not only a compulsory subject to pass in SPM but is also the global lingua franca that is used in international trade, commerce and science.

English is so important that everyone must strive to master it, stressed Azlinda Mohd Nor, advisor of the one- day Creative Writing 1119 English Course at Kapit Civic Centre on Sunday.

“The only way to master the English Language, especially creative English, is practise, practise and practise.

“Reading lots of books written in English will also help readers to master the language,” she said.

The course was organised by Sarawak Teachers’ Union ( STU) in collaboration with Kapit Education Department and a few schools from here and in Song. The course facilitator was Wong Siong Ning from SMK Sarikei Tinggi.

STU Kapit chairman, Teoh Say Beng, in his speech, said the course was meant to guide the participants on how to write creatively and to the required length during examination time.

He hoped those attending the course would use the techniques learned from the course.

Among those present were STU Kapit deputy chairperson Kunchi Bantin, secretary Ho Jia Yiing, assistant secretary Betty Wong, treasurer Ling Leong King and about 20 TESL (Teaching English as a second language) teachers from SMK Kapit, SMK Song, SMK Kapit 2 and SMK Selirik.
