Malaysia’s distributive trade sector up 5 pct
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s d ist r ibut ive trade sector increased by five per cent in the second quarter of 2015 (Q2), driven by positive trading in its sub- sectors.
The retail trade sub- sector grew by 7.2 per cent, followed by wholesale trade (4.0 per cent) and motor vehicles (3.1 per cent), the Statistics Department said in a statement yesterday.
On a quarterly basis, sales value fell 0.4 per cent to RM247.7 billion from RM248.6 billion, it said.
The total number of persons engaged in this sector was 1.6 million, up 2.5 per cent or 39,536 persons, against the same quarter a year ago.

“This was due to the contribution of wholesale of household goods (8.1 per cent), non- specialised wholesale trade (6.2 per cent) and wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco (6.0 per cent),” it said.
Meanwhile, the retail trade sub- sector grew 7.2 per cent or RM6 billion as compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year, underpinned by the increase in retail sale via stalls and markets (11.5 per cent), retail sale of automotive fuel in specialised stores (11.4 per cent) and retail sales of other goods in specialised stores (0.4 per cent).
The sales value of motor vehicles went up by 3.1 per cent year- on-year to RM35.6 billion.
The expansion was contributed by maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (4.0 per cent), sales of motor vehicles (3.7 per cent) and sale of motor vehicles parts and accessories (2.2 per cent). — Bernama
