MIRI: Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai has called on citizens to work together with Miri City Council (MCC) to ensure the cleanliness of the resort city.

Lai said the responsibility to keep the city and its surrounding clean should not lie on MCC alone, but it also requires collaboration as well as efforts from the local community.

“The public need to work together with MCC in taking care of the city’s cleanliness.

“Please do not throw your rubbish as you like and hope MCC workers come collect them and clean them up, because the city’s cleanliness is the responsibility of every citizens,” he said.

According to Lai, members of the public have a right to reprimand those who were irresponsible by throwing their rubbish indiscriminately.

“If you come accross such a person, reprimand them and tell them not to repeat the same act again.

“Civic mindedness is an important element for Miri to achieve its vision of becoming a clean and beautiful city,” he said.

He said this when commenting on complaints received during MCC’s meet-the-people session at Taman Jade Manis, Jalan Persiaran Kabor here last Friday.

The city council received a total of 25 complaints from the public during the session. Most of the complaints were on public cleanliness, rubbish collection and illegal dumping.

Please do not throw your rubbish as you like and hope MCC workers come collect them and clean them up, because the city’s cleanliness is the responsibility of every citizens. — Lawrence Lai, Miri Mayor
