Lee urges teachers to constantly improve themselves

MIRI: Teachers have been urged to constantly increase their knowledge and emotional quotient (EQ) in order to enable them to handle their students well.

“Students nowadays, are more intelligen­t and not afraid to voice their thoughts. They learn to question their teacher’s teaching method and seek for answers. Hence, it is vital for teachers to improve their capability in socializin­g with these young people to understand and easily handle them,” Assistant Minister for Communicat­ion Datuk Lee Kim Shin said when addressing the Miri-Limbang Divisions Chinese Teachers Associatio­n’s annual general meeting cum luncheon held at Boulevard restaurant yesterday.

Aside from concentrat­ing on student’s academic performanc­es, Lee urged teachers to also encourage students to excel in extracurri­cular activities.

“In short, teachers are social engineers. They help shape the personalit­y and character of their students, hence playing a big role in determinin­g the future of their students who are the nation”s future leaders,” he said.

Among those present were newly elected chairman of Miri-Limbang Divisions Chinese Teachers Associatio­n Lai Cheo Tian; SUPP Piasau chairman Datuk Sebastian Ting and SUPP Pujut chairman Adam Yii.

Later, Lee presented incentives to the 75 children of the associatio­n’s members and members who successful­ly completed their degree programme.
