‘Have handicapped user friendly features in building’
MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) has been urged to take the lead in incorporating ‘handicapped user friendly’ features in buildings and future building plans under its jurisdiction.
Speaking at a Chinese New Year open house carrying the theme ‘Towards A Caring Miri Community’ hosted by the city council for around 500 less fortunate people from 13 charitable homes at the ground floor of the civic centre here yesterday, Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin said most office and commercial buildings here were not handicapped user friendly.
“The city council must therefore incorporate these features in their buildings and facilities including recreational facilities. These features will make it more convenient for the handicapped people to move around when they come requesting for services or during official businesses with them,” he added.
Lee said community development must also be given equal attention apart from physical development in the overall development and progress of Miri.
Commending the city council for hosting the less fortunate to the open house, Lee said Miri City Council must also include social and community development in their programmes and activities.
The assistant minister also said the roles and challenges faced by the city council would increase over time in tandem with the development and progress of the city.
“This demands the commitment of every staff to deliver effective and efficient service,” he added.
Mayor Lawrence Lai, Miri Resident Antonio Khati Galis, Piasau SUPP chairman Dato Sebastian Ting and organising chairman Ernest Goh were also present at the gathering.
Apart from the food, the children also received ang pows.
