KUCHING: Members of the public are urged to help the Welfare Department to register persons with disabilities or special needs (OKU) whom they come across.

Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah in appealing for the public’s assistance assured that all persons with special needs or disabilities would receive monthly welfare aid from the government.

“I feel that the public should play a more proactive role when it comes to OKU, because it is not easy for people with disabilities register themselves, so I want to appeal to the public to help register any OKU they know or come across so that they do not miss out on the aid that is offered to them.

“In fact, the state government has agreed to top up the monthly aid that OKUs receive by RM50 starting this year, so a nonworking OKU will receive RM250

instead of RM200, and working OKUs will receive RM350 instead of RM300,” Fatimah said.

She made this call when speaking during a Community Based Rehabilitation Centre (CBR) Chinese New Year programme held at Kuching Park Hotel here on Friday night.

The programme was attended by 50 adult trainees as well as members of the Facebook group ‘Do You Remember’ and Social Welfare Council president Irene Yong.

In her speech, Yong said the CBR in Kuching had set up a music therapy room at the centre which was proving to be a great addition.

“We try to do what we can to provide a quality life for the children at our centres, and music therapy is one of the best ways that we can motivate them. I want to thank the members of the Do You Remember Facebook group for their unyielding support to the centre , thank you,” Yong said.

At the function, Fatimah announced a grant of RM10,000 for the CBR.
