-

PUTRAJAYA: Thousands stormed the headquarters of the National Registration Department ( NRD) here yesterday after word about a false programme for the conversion of the red or permanent resident ( MyPR) card to the MyKad went viral.

Subsequently, the department issued a statement denying the programme that was spread via WhatsApp.

The NRD also urged the public not to believe such news as it was false.

“To date, there has been no change in the conditions or procedure for the application for converting the identity card or nationality,” the statement said.

The NRD also stressed that any information concerning registration and other matters relating to the department could only be confirmed by the National Registration Department director- general and appointed officials.

“The NRD is not conducting any programme to grant citizenship to people who are not eligible and do not meet the conditions laid out in the Federal Constitution,” it said.

The application for identity cards was an ongoing service without a closing date and any dealings concerning identity cards or citizenship could be made at any NRD office and at any time during office hours, the statement said.
