Sarawakians celebrate state’s inaugural Independence Day
KUCHING: Sarawakians take much pride in celebrating the state’s first Independence Day.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem had on April 22 this year declared July 22 a public holiday for Sarawak to honour past leaders who had sacrificed much for the state’s independence.
University student Philip Sim, 22, said he was aware of the existence of Sarawak Day.
“I learned that July 22 is Sarawak Day from the newspaper. I am proud to be a Sarawakian. Declaring today a public holiday is a testimony that we have our own Independence Day,” he said, overcome with pride on Thursday.
Another local Imelda Blassan was fully aware of the significance of July 22.
“It’s a public holiday to commemorate the sacrifices and contributions of our ancestors who fought for Sarawak’s independence from the British. It’s a day for us to cherish and remember,” said the 36-year-old life planner.
Elly Chong first knew about Sarawak Day when signing a petition during a campaign by Sarawak for Sarawakians (S4S) to lobby for this holiday.
Self- employed Chong, 27, said as a Sarawakian, she was proud to have a public holiday to commemorate the day Sarawak achieved self-government from the British.
“I am happy that July 22 is being remembered. It reminds future generations to appreciate the sacrifices of our past leaders, and be proud to be Sarawakians,” she said.
