MIRI: The Sarawak United People’s Party ( SUPP) is looking to set up a new Puteri wing as a platform to groom more future women leaders.

SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the party seeks to spearhead such efforts so there could be the state’s first woman deputy chief minister in future.

Speaking at SUPP’s 57th anniversary celebration on Thursday, the Minister of Local Government said the state’s oldest political party could also have a woman president one day.

old to join the new wing.

“Thus, I need your help. SUPP should not be a Chinese party – it is a multiracial party. I would make sure that we don’t pay lip service,” he said.

Dr Sim said women play a crucial role in various areas of development and should also be a part of the state’s political development.

He pointed out that some 60 per cent of undergraduates at public universities nationwide are women.

“If we give them the chance and provide more leadership training, I believe our women can do well in politics and bring new light to the party,” he said.

On the anniversary celebration, he thanked the people for continuing to trust SUPP.

“Thank you so much for your support in keeping SUPP alive and giving our candidates a chance during the state election.

“To the voters in Piasau and Senadin, a big thank you for making sure our candidates won the election with a big majority.

“The big majority wins for Piasau and Senadin indeed were beyond many people’s expectations.”
