Showcase of Korean cuisine in reciprocal visit to BCF
SIBU: South Korea is not only famed for action-packed martial arts like taekwondo and tang soo do, it is also home to many mouthwatering traditional food.
Sibu Municipal Council ( SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King was at a loss for words when he sampled the Korean traditional delicacies at a cooking demonstration at the Borneo Cultural Festival ( BCF) 2016 here on Thursday.
Mayor Yang Dong In of Geochang County from South Korea had brought a delegation here to demonstrate traditional Korean cooking. According to SMC acting secretary Morshidi Fredrick, this was made possible through the friendship cities arrangement where groundwork was laid by their predecessors in the council.
“Sometime last year, ( SMC deputy chairman) Dato Andrew ( Wong) led a group of councillors to Korea where ( then SMC secretary) Hii Chang Kee also joined the delegation.
“It so happened that Geochang County was having its ‘ Hamadang’ Festival – a cultural festival similar to that of BCF. That is why this year, we receive their visit in conjunction with BCF,” Morshidi told The Borneo Post at the site.
Meanwhile, locals were spotted making a beeline to check out the traditional Korean food. The 13th BCF is being held from July 21 to 30 at Sibu Town Square Phase 1.
Tiong has heralded BCF as a major tourism event in Sarawak. Besides the Chinese pavilion, Dayak pavilion, Malay/ Melanau pavilion, Youth pavilion, there were also the Cultural Art Exhibition Belt, Sibu Tradex and BCF main stage to spruce up the festival. Among those present was Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee.
