Sarawak off to flying start in tennis
KUCHING: Sarawak started the Sukma men’s tennis competition with 3- 0 victories over Johor and Kedah at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) Tennis Centre yesterday.
The two wins have boosted their chances of getting into the semifi nals.
Alvin Teng showed the way for Sarawak with an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Johor’s Abdul Hamir Shah in the fi rst singles.
Muhd Aiman Hamdan then outplayed Mohd Irfan Halim 6-2, 6-2 in the second singles.
Low Zhe Han and Rohaizat Achop Borhan tamed Mohd Syafiee Abd Jalil and Muhd Mu’az Khalid 6- 0, 6-2 in the doubles to wrap up the fi rst win for Sarawak in Group A.
Sarawak maintained their momentum against Kedah with Alvin Teng delivering Sarawak’s fi rst point by beating Mohd Arieff Shamida 6-1,6- 0.
In the second singles, Muhd Aiman beat Cheah Chern Eu 62, 6-2. Low and Rohaizat handed Sarawak the final point by beating Ku Muhd Syafiq Ku Ee and Muhd Shamil Mazlan 6- 3, 6-2.
Meanwhile, Sarawak women’s team also gave an impressive display by beating Sabah 2-1 and Kedah 3- 0 in Group A.
Aslina Chua defeated Sabah’s Azlien Natasyah 6- 0, 6- 0 in the first singles.
However, Alia Azman lost to Cheryl Ye 0- 6, 3- 6 before Belinda Chai and Linda Liong secured Sarawak’s win by beating Caren Chang and Nursharneem Imann 6-1, 6- 0.
Sarawak will face Terengganu today to determine which team will top the group table as both teams have won two games each. — by Daryll Law
