BINTULU: SMK Kidurong will be representing the state in the Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) Challenge 2016.

For this competition, students are involved in community related activities and this year’s theme is ‘solid waste management’.

Teacher-in- charge Nurul Huda Zulkifli said the students had conducted a solid waste analysis at Tanjung Batu Beach - a designated area for their eco project.

“From their analysis, the students discovered that most of the wastes in this recreational area can be recycled.

(BDA) has entrusted us to beautify the Parking 2 and Parking 3 areas,” she told reporters when met at Tg Batu Beach yesterday.

SMK Kidurong principal Rosli Salleh was present to give morale support to students working on improving the area’s landscape.

Nurul said various activities had been organised by students since June to promote greater public awareness on the importance of cleanliness of the park.

“We believe one of the ways is making beach goers more aware of the 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) campaign and their responsibility of keeping the beach and its surroundings clean,” she added.

Nurulbelievedthat studentswere getting closer to the community through these activities while promoting eco, go green and 3R campaigns.

“Since we kicked off our initiative to clean up and beautify this park by decorating strategic spots with murals, we found indiscriminate dumping has reduced significantly,” she added.

Another strategy is approaching the public to explain to them how they can contribute to a green and clean environment.

The project is jointly organised by SMK Kidurong, its ParentTeacher Association and BDA.

Their work will be judged by TEY officials on Aug 25 and they will be going to Kuala Lumpur for the project presentation and exhibition.

“We hope this project will inspire students to be more responsible towards the environment,” said Nurul.

The project at Tg Batu Beach is expected to be launched on Aug 13.
