Delayed as no wind in the sails at calm Marina Bay

-

MIRI: After a stormy Tuesday, the Sukma sailing competition for all classes and Optimist category had to be postponed yesterday as there was no strong wind to start the game though the lull was a buffer for sailors doing repairs.

Speaking at the competition venue, the event’s Technical delegate Yeow Eng Leong said the f lag- off for the categories scheduled for 10 am could not take off as the wind was only about two knots.

As a comparison, the singlehanded dinghy can apparently handle winds of up to 30 knots.

“I was informed by the race officer for Course A, that the wind is only about two knots at the moment. So we have to postpone until the wind is strong enough for them to sail,” he told reporters.

The Answering Pennant (AP) flag has been raised since 9.30am and the race only started at 1pm, with Sarawak being the first to set sail for the day in the Optimist Team category.

“We raised the AP flag at 9.30am this morning, meaning that all the races for Course A and Course B are postponed.

“Yesterday was heavy winds for us, so we had a lot of repairs to do this morning. In a way, it is also good that the wind did not come too early. We have time to recover from yesterday’s strong wind,” he disclosed.

Yeow added that yesterday’s scheduled slots were for Optimist Team event, therefore all the other classes which did not complete their race the day before will continue on course B.

Out of 13 teams registered, he said only ten will take part in the Optimist Team category.

“It’s a double knockout system. This means that, in the early preliminary round, if they lose, they will be out of the game. So, I hope we will be able to finish our race by Friday. If all the classes do not finish their races by then, we will continue on Saturday while Saturday will also be the prizegiving ceremony,” he pointed out.

In Windsurfing category, Yeow said only one race was successful on Tuesday due to poor weather. The category was continued again yesterday, and perhaps into today.

“Until Saturday, if we cannot catch up by 3pm, we will stop. If we got eight races, the result of all the eight races will be counted, if we got nine races, then all the nine will be counted. That’s the rule that we have. I believe coaches and managers understand this rule. That is why, to them every race is important as there is no final race, because all races will accumulate points.

“Out of the number of races we have, we will accumulate points and that will be the winner. So the lowest scoring point is use. The one with less points will be the winner. Not the maximum point,” he explained further. — by Jacqueline Raphael
