Terengganu’s sister act stand in Aslina’s way

KUCHING: Aslina Chua swept aside second seed Terengganu’s Unar Nayar 6-1, 6- 2 to start her campaign in the women’s singles at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Associatio­n Tennis (SLTA) Centre yesterday.

The US- based Sarawakian will face Sabah’s Nursaharne­em Imann in today’s (July 28) quarterfin­al after the latter saw off the challenge from Sasha Naomi Nair of Negeri Sembilan 6-2, 6- 0.

However, another Sarawak player Linda Liong was sent packing 6- 0, 6- 3 by top seed and Umar’s sister Sara.

In the quarterfi nals, Sara takes on Natalie Loke of Penang who brushed aside Sabah’s Caren Chang 6- 0, 6-1.

In the men’s singles, fi fth seed Muhd Aiman Hamdan advanced to the second round after beating Takeshi Koey of Negeri Sembilan 6- 3, 6- 4 while Sarawak’s other player Isaac Low lost 0- 6, 0- 6 to Christian Didier Chin of Sabah.

Aiman will next play fourth seed Liew Kah Sing of Federal Territory in the last eight.

The top seeds were safely through, with top seed Ahmed Deedat Razak of Selangor beating Mohd Syafee Abd Jalil of Johor 6-1, 6-3 and second seed Koay Hao Sheng from Perlis posting a 6-2, 6-1 win over Md Irzad Shazurin.

Sarawak’s pair of Belinda Chai and Linda Liong sprang a surprise in the women’s doubles by ousting second seeds Aznor Qistina Mastura- Juliana Shalini 6-2, 6- 0.

They will clash with Sabrina Gee-Natalie Loke of Penang today for a place in the semi-fi nals.

Meanwhile, Sarawak has no more interest in the men’s doubles as both pairs are out. Alvin TengRohaiz­at Achop Borhan Janang lost 3- 6, 5- 7 to Muhd Asyraf f Safian- Kiew Kah Sing of the Federal Territory while Low Zhe Han- Muhd Aiman Hamdan fell 4- 6, 1- 6 to Perak’s Muhd Asykal Azhar-Ahamd Faez Shamsuddin in the quarter-fi nals.

The round of 16 matches for the mixed doubles were interrupte­d half way by a drizzle at around 4pm.
