No gold from Sarawak athletes on second day

KUCHING: Sarawak bagged two silver and one bronze on the second day of athletics at Stadium Sarawak yesterday. It was a good day for Selangor, Sabah and Malacca each collected two gold.

Sarawak’s Raphael Asun contribute­d the second silver in the men’s javelin after Jonathan Nyepa finished second in the 100m race earlier.

In the morning, defending champion Faradilah Raznie managed only the bronze in the women’ s 800 ma ft er finishing in 2:18.80secs behind Kedah silver medalist Teoh Kim C hy ii na photo finish and Selangor’s J SJ a vin der Kaur who won in 2:13.77.

Selangor’s Asi f Rahman Jiyaudeen and Putra Azrul Syazwan Azman finished onetwo in a thrilling men’s 800m race separated by a mere 0.4 seconds. Asif clocked 1min 54.41secs for the gold while Sabahan Raymond Yew Liang Tung came in third.

Abdul Latif Romly of Perlis leapt 7.46m to win the men’s long jump while Bibi Nuraishah Ishak of Kelantan won the women’s shot put with a best throw of 12.74m.

The first event of the day saw Premkumaar Ramesh of Negeri Sembilan winning the 10,000m men’s walk race with a time of 47min 33.27secs.

Muhammad Azam Masri of Melaka clocked 47.80s to win the 400m while Sabahan Fathin Faqihah won the women’s race in 57.43s.

Long distance specialist Poo Vasanthan Subramania­m of Pahang col lected his second medal after winning the 5,000m with a time of 15: 54.75s.

In the women’s race, Sabah’s Salesnella Gabi bagged the gold with 19:15.12sec.

Meanwhi le, Mohammad Luqman Mohammad Zuki set a new Sukma record in the men’s decathlon after amassing 6,108 points.

The previous record of 6,094 points was set by Sazari Sahar from Selangor 10 years ago.

The Kedahan won four - 100m, shot put, discus and pole vault - out of the 10 events.

Sarawak’s Iqbal Farhan Ten Mohamed Asraf was sixth place with 4,590 points, although he finished first in the 400m race and 1,500m.
