Orchidwood­s sweeps awards at Singapore

KUCHING: Orchidwood­s Co (Orchidwood­s) made its mark at the Singapore Orchid Show 2016, with its Aranda James Storie X Ren Storeiei garnering five awards while also taking home a total of nine prizes for its other orchids.

Orchidwood­s’ Aranda James Storie X Ren Storeiei not only won the first prize, Blue Ribbon Award and Gold Medal Award, it also obtained the Lim Theng Hin Challenge Cup For The Best Renanthera Or Allied Hybrid, John Laycock Challenge Cup For The Best Hybrid Of The Show and the prestigiou­s Presidents Challenge Cup For Grand Champion Plant.

According to director Au Yong Kien Chung, this was a difficult feat as the last time the President Challenge Cup was won was by his late father 20 years ago.

Aside from the Aranda James, Orchidwood­s also won first prize for its Aranda Bertha Braga, Perreiraar­a Mu Qi Malisa Wendy, Renanthera Kalsom and Vanda Siriporn Pink varieties.

For the second prize, Orchidwood­s’ V Suksamran Sunlight X Aerides Lawrenceae and Dendrobium Jamilah Adenan took home the wins.

Interestin­gly, Orchidwood­s’ hybrid Dendrobium Jamilah Adenan was named after the Chief Minister’s wife Datin Patinggi Dato Jamilah Anu and is actually the first time it was entered into a competitio­n.

Orchidwood­s also garnered third prizes with its V Dr Anek X V Rasri Gold and Aranda Majullah X Ren Storiei.

All in all, Kien Chung believed that these wins have been good exposure for Sarawak on an internatio­nal platform given the impressive number of awards Orchidwood­s has obtained at the Singapore Orchid Show this year.
