MCC councillors visit Krokop abattoir

-

MIRI: Members of Miri City Council’s ( MCC) public health section including its public health standing committee paid an inspection visit to the council’s abattoir in Krokop on Wednesday.

According to Miri mayor Adam Yii who led the group, their main objective was to get a clear picture on the slaughterhouse’s operations.

“The abattoir in Krokop provides pig slaughtering services for city. As the abattoir is owned by MCC, it is important for the councillors on the public health standing committee particularly new councillors to familiarise themselves with its activities and operations,” he said.

He was generally satisfied with the abattoir’s slaughter operations which are carried out using machinery.

Additionally, he gave the thumbs-up to the slaughterhouse’s wastewater treatment plant, noting the importance of treating wastewater from pig slaughtering activities before discharging it into a nearby river.

Even so, Yii added, there was room for improvement, particularly to address the unpleasant smell resulting from slaughtering activities.

“We have to further increase the hygienic management of facilities so no unpleasant smell will be emitted during the process of collecting the wastewater before it is brought to the next water treatment level.
