SIBU: A 64- strong squad of Special Olympics athletes will be demonstrating their physical prowess during the Borneo Post Run ( BP Run) on Aug 31 at Sibu Town Square.

They are currently preparing themselves for the run through a series of training sessions at Kutien Garden in Bukit Lima here under the watchful eyes of volunteers.

Clinical director for Special Olympics Sibu Dr Toh Teck Hock said the athletes will be accompanied by volunteers on a one-to- one basis during the run.

The volunteers consist of SEGi University medical students, Agape Centre staff, and teachers from SJK Thai Kwang and SMK Lanang.

“We from Special Olympics Sibu are very thankful for the support we get from these sporting volunteers,” Dr Toh said.

“The precious support from them means so much to us. It enables our athletes to join the BP Run with a greater level of confidence and motivation.”

The training sessions at Kutien Garden are organised by Special Olympics Sibu and supported by SEGi University.

SEGi University‘s Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof Dr Samiah Yasmin officiated at the commencement of a training session yesterday.

Sibu Clinical Campus associate dean Prof Mohd Raili Suhaimi was also present.

“Our students are made up of international students including those from Kenya and Nigeria,” she said.

Kenyan student Musenya Mwangangi, deemed it a precious experience to interact with the Special Olympics athletes.

“It provides a great learning experience as we accompany them during this training session.
