Dr Jerip lauds passing of gas Bill
The Supply 2017/2016 Bills and Distribution of Gas Bill, 2016 passed during the just concluded State Legislative Assembly ( DUN) sitting will greatly benefit the people.
Assistant Minister for Public Health Datuk Dr Jerip Susil when moving a motion on DUN adjournment said the Distribution of Gas Bill, 2016 had sparked lots of interest among the lawmakers and several pertinent issues were raised.
Among these issues were the authoritative powers and executive administration and distribution of gas, the safety measures and standards that must be put in place for the distribution to end consumers, and pricing of gas.
“The passing of the Bill is a significant step in the power devolution process under the Federal Constitution and in accordance with recommendations of the InterGovernment Committee (IGC) which are vested with our state,” Dr Jerip told the august House, adding it would safeguard the state’s economic interests by ensuring resources like natural gas are available to boost industrial development, thus enabling local gas-related industries to grow.
“The passing of the Bill sent a clear message to Petronas to be more mindful of the aspiration and needs of Sarawakians and that any matter pertaining to gas supply industries are subject to state laws,” the Mambong assemblyman said.
On the Supply 2017/2016 Bill, Dr Jerip said the state had over the years, established stringent control on expenses.
“It has to be emphasised that the state continues to enjoy a strong financial position. The state over the years has also maintained prudent financial management and good financial practices,” he stressed, adding that the actual annual surplus was over the estimated surplus.
Dr Jerip also said that he was glad to note that the Bill had a strong commitment to and emphasis on rural development to narrow the development gap between the urban and rural areas and commended the setting up of three cabinet committees to identify key result areas to further spur the economic growth.
