New school block to have canteen and car park among other things

-

SIBU: SJK (C) Nang Sang will build a 4- storey school block costing RM3.3 million to accommodate its increasing student population.

Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh will perform the earth-breaking for the project at the school basketball court at 7.30am on Dec 3.

School management board chairman Kapitan Ting Chek Ming said the block would be named after late philanthropist Datuk Yii Yii Peng and wife Datin Loh Leh Huong.

The new block will provide 15 classrooms on the upper floors. The ground floor will house a canteen. Incorporated into the building plan are a car park, a roofed basketball court and a jogging track.

“Once the new building is completed, we will have enough classrooms,” Ting told a press conference yesterday morning in the presence of school headmistress Chua Eng Chioh and the project organising chairman Hu Siew Liong.

Ting said the working committee had collected about RM1 million in construction cost. He called for support from the public.

The school is the only Chinese-medium school in Ulu Sungei Merah. It started in 1935, opposite its existing site before it was demolished in 1950 to give way to a new block of buildings.

In 2011, the existing building, named after Ting Chek Ming, was completed.

There are 12 classrooms. Currently, it has 470 pupils and 25 teachers.
