Public welcomed to donate books to Sibu Jaya Public Library

-

SIBU: Sibu Jaya Public Library which is managed by Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) is now receiving book donations from the public.

The council’s deputy chairman Robert Lau said this community project would be a joint effort by SRDC and the public to build the community.

Speaking at the launching of the library’s extended opening hours last weekend, Lau urged members of the public to give their old books to the library to promote reading instead of throwing them away.

“There are already thousands of books in Sibu Jaya Public Library, but we need more. Share the books you have read with us. Do not throw away these resources.”

To further promote the project, SRDC is working with a print media company to organise a book donation sometime next year, Lau disclosed.

He also said the present book donation project was off to an encouraging start, with SJK Thian Hua principal, Ngu Ling Ling, the first person to step forward to donate books.

Ngu handed over her old books to Lau during the recent launch.

The library now has nearly 30,000 books – some 15,655 books in Bahasa Malaysia, 8,399 in English, 5,242 in Chinese and 198 in Iban.

A minimal registration fee of RM6 per adult and RM5 per child is charged for library membership.

Meanwhile, Lau called on students in the new township to make use of their yearend school holidays to read, saying cultivating a reading habit would enrich their lives.

He said Sibu Jaya Public Library had extended its opening hours to the weekend to promote the reading habit among the public.

“The holiday is a time to promote it to ensure students will spend their time fruitfully instead of wasting it elsewhere.”

The library also hosted a colouring contest in line with the launch.

The winners of the kindergarten and lower primary category are Nathan Ling Kwong Chen (champion) followed by Jamie Voon Ing Zin, Muhamad Saifuddin Rezuan, Christen and Noralizan Rezuan who are the first to fourth runners-up respectively.

Meanwhile the winners of the upper primary category are Nurul Syafiera (champion), followed by Nurul Nobila Nazreen, Jaceyln, Frynellia Lenny and Alvin Tok in second to fifth place respectively.

Sibu Jaya Public Library is now open on Saturday and Sunday from 9am-1pm while weekday operating hours remain unchanged.

From Monday to Thursday, the opening hours are from 10am to noon and 1pm6pm while on Friday, the library is open from 10am-11.30am and 2pm- 6pm. It is closed on public holidays.
