‘Promote interest in English, maths, science’
LAWAS: Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan has exhorted preschools to inculcate children’s interest in science, mathematics and English in order to prepare them to pursue knowledge and skills as they progress into the formal education system.
The Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment and Minister of Industrial and Entrepreneurship Development, Trade and Investment made the call when launching the Kemas4U Carnival at Lawas Public Park yesterday.
The three- day carnival started on Dec 1 with short courses on hairstyling, professional make-up and online business conducted for the people here.
“We cannot run away from the reality that only knowledge and skills can uplift our society and the country and are essential in transforming our rural socio- economic landscape,” he said.

Awang Tengah urged Kemas to also be exposed to entrepreneurship concept, particularly in the online business trend.
“Through skills development programmes such as in Karnival Kemas4U, people would be able to carve out opportunities to own business such becoming restaurant proprietor through skills gained,” he said.

are game changers for every country. He also urged it’s kindergarten teachers to plant the seed of awareness among the young children of the importance and uniqueness of living in harmony and solidarity in diverse Sarawak.
The minister later presented the Skill Class Certificate and adult class certificates to the respective participants who included a 63 year- old grandmother from Lawas.
Earlier, Deputy Directorgeneral of Kemas Ahmad Kamal Idris said the department aimed at empowering communities by creating opportunities and widening access in education, business and employment to target groups.
Also present at the function were Deputy MinisterofDomestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Datuk Henry Sum Agong, Assistant Minister of Welfare and Community Wellbeing Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail, Limbang Resident Datuk Maria Hasman, Lawas District officer Hussaini Hakim and community leaders.
