Super Mok leads Miri’s trio
KUCHING: Upcoming athlete Mok Xiao Yuan from Wushu Federation of Sarawak affiliate Piasau Zhong Hua Wushu Club impressed at the recent 6th Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia-Wushu Federation of Malaysia ( KPM-WFM) Wushu Championship held in Penang.
The student from SMK St Columba captured one gold medal and one bronze medal to help Sarawak finish in sixth place with three gold, two silver and six bronze medals at Han Chiang High School Indoor Stadium.
Mok bagged the gold medal in the Boys B taijijian where he scored 8.35 points to beat seven other competitors while his bronze was won in Boys B taijijian.
“The state team was represented by three athletes from Miri Mok Xiao Yuan, Mo Shin Qi who is competing for the second time while Fu Sian Wei is making his debut in the meet,” said Piasau Zhong Hua Wushu Club secretary Jong Chin Wei.
According to him, Mok had done very well in the Miri Division Wushu Tournament organised by the club and he was roped into the state junior team for the KPM championship.
“After undergoing more than one month of intensive training at the state elite wushu training centre in Kuching under coaches Ling Ung Hee and Lau Hui Wei, the three Miri athletes improved greatly and were able to put on an encouraging display in the competition in Penang,” he added.
Jong said Mo, who is from SMK Pei Min, finished fifth in the Girls 42-style taijiquan and seventh in the Girls 42- style taijijian while 12-year old Fu, a student at SJK © Chung Hua Miri, was sixth in Boys nangun, seventh in foundation daoshu and ninth in the foundation qiangshu.
“Our coaches are very satisfied with their performance and we would like to thank WFS for grooming them and giving them the chance to compete in the national championship.
“I hope all our trainees will continue to train very hard so that they can be selected to represent the state in future competitions,” he said.
As a recognit ion for the achievement of the three state athletes, Jong said the club presented them with cash incentives and hoped it would motivate them to scale even greater heights in wushu.
