LAWAS: Muslims here, particularly the youths, must never allow themselves to be manipulated by extremists or terrorists, reminds Second Resource Planning and Environment Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

He acknowledged that there were several Malaysians who had been identified as having joined certain militant groups, which claimed to be fighting in the name of Islam.

“Islam never, ever encourages terrorism. These militant groups are actually abusing the name of Islam, causing many people to have a very negative perception on the religion and its followers.

“This could only be changed when the Muslims themselves adhere strictly to the true teachings of Islam,” he said at the district-level Maulidur Rasul celebration at Lawas Public Park yesterday. His wife Datin Amar

Datuk Dayang Morliah Datuk Awang Daud, Lawas District Officer Hussaini Hakim and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu PBB Bukit Sari deputy chairman Awangku Jinal Pengiran Jawa were also present.

Awang Tengah, who is Bukit Sari assemblyman, also called upon parents to keep close watch on their children to avoid them from getting involved in ill activities such as drug abuse.

“It is the responsibility of all Muslims to uphold the good name of Islam – a religion of peace that rejects terrorism. Rather, Islam encourages its faithful to lead a holy and humble life, as well as to promote goodwill and respect others.

“As Muslims, we all should practise ‘wasatiyyah’ (moderation) in our daily lives. Islam also encourages us to strive for excellence but there must be a balance – success should cover material and spiritual aspects,” he said.

Earlier, a procession of 50 contingents comprising 5,000 people who represented various governmental and nongovernmental organisations including local village security and development committees was held.

The team from Lawas District Council was adjudged the best contingent.
