MIRI: Consistent road safety campaigns throughout the year have seen a drop in the number of accidents recorded here.

Assistant Minister for Land and Air Transportation and Safety Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the statistics prove that road safety campaigns are slowly raising the awareness of the people on the importance of responsible road use.

“Accident- prone areas like Miri- Bintulu Road ( Miri, Niah, Bekenu); Miri-Pujut-Lutong road; Miri-Airport Road; Lutong-PujutMiri road; and Kuala Baram Bypass road have recorded a reduction between 5 and 20 per cent from last year, while Jalan Bakam recorded a reduction as much as 50 per cent this year compared to last year around the same time,” he told a press conference after launching a road safety campaign at Morsjaya yesterday.

Lee said the government had set up a research team to discuss factors that can lead to road accidents.

“It was found based on the research that over 70 per cent of road accidents are due to the human factor, while the technical factor such as road design, could be contributing to road accidents.

“The government is doing all that it can to ensure the safety of road users on the road, and the latter must also do their part by driving safely and being cautious on the road,” he said.
