High time for PRS to field women candidate in elections

-

KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak ( PRS) Women’s Wing lauded the suggestion that the party may consider proposing a female candidate in the next parliamentary election.

They said this following a statement made by PRS information chief Datuk William Nissom which was published by The Borneo Post yesterday.

“It is high time that PRS, being the second largest party in the state, shows seriousness and pave the way for Dayak women to be candidates in the coming parliamentary election,” said PRS Women’s Wing in their statement yesterday.

“We hope the unavailability of seat(s) will not be used time and again as reason to disqualify capable and qualified women to be candidates. After all, PRS has at least six seats allocated to them,” it added.

PRS Women’s Wing said that they have worked hard and contributed a fair share towards the well-being and success of PRS.

“We know no boundaries in playing our roles and giving our best to ensure PRS is what it has become today including its success in winning past general and state elections,” it said.

The statement also disclosed that there are PRS Members of Parliament who had expressed willingness to step down in the coming parliamentary election and if PRS is serious about gender inclusiveness and equality, this is the time to field women candidates.

“After all, we are not short of women who are capable and educated,” it further pointed out.

The statement went on to say that PRS has equal number of women members in the party and women voters in their constituencies.

“The track record showed that women had been ‘King Makers’ in PRS constituencies as they have recorded high number of voters turn out,” it revealed.

PRS won all of their seats in the last parliamentary and recent state elections.
