Gong Yoo’s ‘Goblin’ beats record set by ‘Descendant­s’

According to Good Data Corporatio­n, which monitors TV ratings across South Korea, Goblin, which premiered on Dec 2, had scored an amazing 12,500 points in its debut week.

SEOUL: In South Korea, horror beats romance anytime.

That’s evident because the series Goblin, starring horror movie actor Gong Yoo, has beaten the ratings record set by Descendant­s of the Sun.

Goblin, also known as Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, has been garnering solid ratings since its premiere. Online, it has also been the most buzzworthy among current TV series in South Korea.

According to Good Data Corporatio­n, which monitors TV ratings across South Korea, Goblin, which premiered on Dec 2, had scored an amazing 12,500 points on its debut week.

The tvN drama’s achievemen­t even trumped the records previously posted by the KBS hit series Descendant­s of the Sun. Descendant­s, starring current heartthrob Song Joong-ki, reached the same score only in its fifth week.

For its second broadcast, Goblin recorded an even higher score. Its second week score was double that of Descendant­s.

Among netizens in South Korea, Goblin is currently the most discussed TV drama. For the first 48 hours after its debut, it had been discussed nearly 62,000 times, according to data from Daumsoft, as cited by Yonhap News.

Goblin also scored 101.51 points on Daumsoft’s TV popularity index during its premiere. After tvN broadcast the second episode, the score soared to 120.84 points.

The tvN drama features the story of the war general-turned-goblin Kim Shin who is cursed with an immortal life. Portrayed by Gong, the goblin searches for a special human bride who can end his curse.
